Volunteer Needs at the ReStore What kinds of activities do volunteers do in the store? 95% of the work at the store involves cleaning, either the store itself or items that are coming in. Staff and volunteers spend the bulk of their time cleaning incoming appliances and furniture, doing laundry, sorting and cleaning dishes and housewares, vacuuming, dusting, mopping, etc. Some volunteers carry out more specialized tasks if they have a lot of experience in certain areas like books, computers, etc. Other volunteers help with staging and merchandising if they have retail experience or a good eye for spacial relationships. Some volunteers help create flyers or sale signs, or help keep up with our social media. Volunteers who are physically able often help with loading and moving furniture and appliances. Maybe you know ways to enhance certain merchandise areas in the store, or you have promotional ideas or special skills we haven't thought of using before. Please, feel free to speak up and help!
How does scheduling work? We have several people who regularly donate their time and efforts to the ReStore. Some come once a week for a few hours, some come as many as three times a week for several hours each time. You can tailor your volunteer time to your own schedule and energy! Shifts need to be at least two hours long, but beyond that you can schedule regular weekly time to come in or arrange with the Assistant Manager or Manager week by week for your volunteer time.
What do I do to start volunteering? Call or stop by the store to let us know you're interested and set up a time for your first volunteering session. On your first day, we'll have some paperwork for you to complete, then you can dig in on whatever fun stuff we have to work on!

Important for those seeking community service hours:
The bulk of the tasks at ReStore will involve thorough cleaning of the store or of incoming donated goods.
Sometimes tasks will involve various steps or procedures which might not be familiar to you; be sure to ask for any necessary clarification.
The best volunteers are detail-oriented and diligent, ask questions when needed, and are good listeners.
If you finish a task be sure to ask a supervisor to review it and to give you a new task, and be sure to put your tools and products away.
Pickens Co. Habitat ReStore reserves the right to refuse future hours to any community service volunteers who do not stay on task, or whose work is inefficient or ineffective.
